on the issues

how i approach our most pressing Issues

I experienced our housing crisis firsthand when I moved here. It's the reason I decided to run for this office.

As a lifelong renter, I found our options in Island County limited. After months of searching, we took the plunge and bought our first house. We went from finding the listing to making an offer in less time than it takes to cook dinner. There were 6 competing offers.

When we finally closed, we got to see the house for the first time and it was full of mold. Sadly, our story is not unique, and we are one of the lucky ones because we were able to buy.

The solution to the housing crisis here is simple, but it's not easy: we must build more dwellings. This will come with its own set of benefits and challenges, but we cannot ignore this problem any longer. When our workforce is commuting from Burlington and Everett, we are asking too much of them.

I will work to make accessory dwelling units (ADUs) a functional reality as a mid-term solution.  I will also work with our cities to concentrate density there to preserve our rural character, provide easier access to our infrastructure, give equitable access to resources and jobs for those who do not have cars so that they can utilize Island Transit, and create more demand on our main streets for local food and fare with more people living nearby these businesses every day.

Thinking 20 Years Ahead

Housing solutions

As a rural healthcare system who serves many VA and Tricare patients, our medical access is a top priority for me.

I will continue to coordinate with nurses and legislators to discover where our opportunities are, especially for our most vulnerable populations like the elderly and children.

I will work with Whidbey Public Health to expand valuable resources available to every member of our community, because a healthy public means a healthy island.

To the extent possible as a county commissioner, I will advocate for emergency planning in the event of a natural disaster.

I also support increased funding for our police, co-responders, first responders and animal control.

As a small business owner myself for over a decade, I understand the unique hurdles of starting and running a business. I understand cashflow issues and seasonality, and will work with our main street associations, chambers and tourism boards to invite sustainable, profit-producing foot traffic to Island County.

I will advocate for a system of trails leading into and around Oak Harbor for non-car transportation options and greater access to our downtown areas for visitors and residents alike.

I am the only District 2 candidate endorsed by both  Win with Women and the National Women's Political Caucus. I am committed to supporting women's reproductive health in Island County. I will work with local administrators, officials and employees to improve our domestic abuse resources, and to hire as many SANE certified nurses as we can afford as a county.

I am committed to supporting women's reproductive health in Island County and will always protect access to reproductive care on our Islands so women do not have to travel for the care they need.

The Only Pro-Choice Candidate in District 2

I support the Climate Commitment Act and will personally vote to oppose the repeal of ballot initiative 2117.

Climate concerns are one of my highest priorities given the disproportionate effect here on Whidbey of our actions to our waters. You cannot separate out the issues the island is facing from the climate concerns, as they are directly intertwined. For example, new housing needs new water lines which strain our aquifers, and new septic systems which damage our shoreline if not engineered correctly.

While a housing shortage can be temporary, a climate crisis is not. In my immediate term, I am prioritizing workforce housing above all other issues except climate concerns– that is, it may be more expensive to pursue sustainable development but I believe we can consciously have both more workforce housing, and an environment that is not irreparably and permanently damaged in the process.

I understand the sacrifice our military and military families make every day as an active member of this community.

I've seen families at the commissary struggle to pay for their groceries as costs rise, and to work as childcare options are limited.

I provide the unique perspective as the only County Commissioner candidate in all of island county with an insight into what our life is like as an active duty military family today.
